Wireless @HFC

Henry Ford College now provides wireless access for all faculty, staff, and registered students. These simple instructions will help you get up and running with wireless service.


Currently, the wireless network is available in all buildings except the bookstore from 6:00 am until 10:00 pm daily. This service provides Access to web based resources only. Only web-based email is supported. (HFC wireless does not support POP3 or IMAP mail.) Printing is not available on the wireless network.

Getting Connected

Install and configure your wireless network card using the instructions found in your owner's manual.

Depending on your network card and current setup, you may need to make a configuration change to attach to our network. The only configuration change that you will have to make is to change the SSID to "HFCCV2". The SSID is case-sensitive, so make sure to type it in upper-case. For most cards, there is a tab labeled configuration and this is where you will find the location. If you also run a wireless network at home, or another location, you will want to set up a profile to make it more easy to switch between networks. It is suggested to label the profile "HFCC", and you will want to set it up with the SSID "HFCCV2".

Once this is set up, you should be able to open your web browser. You will be prompted to log in. Log in with your Novell Network (NDS) login and password.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why am I not able to connect?

You will need to set your SSID to "HFCCV2". With different vendors, the location varies. With the wireless cards that we have tested, most have a configuration tab, this is where you can set your SSID. There may also be a profile tab. You can create a new profile, label it "HFC" and set the SSID to "HFCCV2".

Q: My SSID is set to "HFCCV2" but I still cannot connect, what am I doing wrong?

SSID's are case-sensitive. The SSID on the campus is "HFCCV2", all in upper-case.

Q: I am associated with one of the access points on the campus, but I am still not getting the login screen to access the internet. Why is this happening?

Is your Internet explorer configured for a home network? If so, you will need to change your settings to automatically detect settings.

Do this by:

  • Opening Internet Explorer
  • Click on Tools on the menu bar
  • Click on Internet Options
  • Click on the Connections tab
  • Click on LAN settings in the lower-right corner
  • Check Automatically Detect Settings
  • If you have proxy server checked, uncheck that

Q: Why am I not able to access the internet when it is set to automatically detect settings?

You may have a static IP address defined on your laptop.

To change this:

  • For Windows 7 go to the Control Panel and select Network and Internet
  • Select Network and Sharing Center
  • From the left-side menu select Change Adapter Settings
  • Right-click on your wireless adapter and select properties
  • Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 and make sure it is set to Obtain an IP Address Automatically
  • For Windows XP right-click on Network Places and select properties
  • Right-click on your Local Area Network and select properties
  • In the network properties window, find TCP/IP for your network adapter and click on the Properties button.
  • If it is set to a static address, change to Obtain an IP address automatically

Q: Can I use HFC's wireless service to get my email?

You can send and receive email only if your email provider has a web interface. Faculty can utilize GroupWise WebAccess to retrieve their email. Students can use Hawkmail.

Q: Can I use HFC's wireless service to access my H: drive?

Wireless users can use Filr to access the contents of their network home directory.

Q: Where can I access the wireless network in other buildings?

The wireless network is available in all building except the bookstore from 6:00 am until 10:00 pm daily.

Q: Can I use my smartphone?

Yes, to date, we have tested iPhone and Android devices.

Q: My Computer is having problems, what should I do?

The first step is to contact the vendor or store that you purchased the computer. Another option is to enlist the aid of a local computer reseller, such as Canton Computers.

Q: Where can I purchase equipment?

Recommended retailers include the HFC Bookstore, Canton Computers, or Access Interactive.
